Rosehill: Many Hopes Lie Buried

One of Rosehill’s most exceptional gravesites belongs to the family of retailer and book collector E.H. Stein. It is superintended by two exquisitely carved dogs, greyhounds in appearance. Sadly, one of the dogs was badly damaged in 2019 by a car that slid off the road. One hopes that “perpetual care” includes an effort to repair the beautiful creature. Not too far from the Steins, it should be noted, is the Baker family, watched over by a life-size sculpture of a deer.

Loyal Watchers

Rosehill has its share of finely carved tombstones, broken tree and wheel sculptures, and fading gravestone figures, as well as a few mystery shapes.

Here are some resources for spending more time with Rosehill:

  • Findagrave.com’s Rosehill search page. Findagrave’s coverage isn’t complete, nor is its accuracy. But it’s still mostly correct and incredibly useful for researching people, their families and their burial places. Extra bonus points when an obituary is attached.
  • Jim Craig’s Under Every Tombstone blog has lots of interesting material, focused on the stories, not the graves. Craig has contributed heavily to Findagrave, so a warm thanks is deserved.
  • The official Rosehill Cemetery site.
