The Anonymous Portrait Gallery - 4
There is not a touch of kitsch to the lady on velvet. Acquired at a yard sale in Springfield, Mass., it's a straight portrait, modestly executed (presumably from a photo) and tastefully framed.
The very buxom gal reflects a different mindset altogether. This retouched photo was acquired at Chicago's ancient Maxwell Street flea market, along with some unretouched nudes that appear to be of the same model.
There is more drama to the orange lady than in almost any painting I own. The contrast between the background orange and green dress, the oversize eyes, the truncated right fingers and the flowers that seem like they're preparing to attack the sitter together produce an effect far more magnificent than the 20 cents this cost in a Springfield, Mass., thrift store.
