The Anonymous Portrait Gallery - 2
These unsigned oil portraits are all dated the fall of 1956. They're from Chicago, they are all encased in black stand-up desktop frames, and they are all in perfect condition. One picture in the series (unpurchased by me) was of Marilyn Monroe. Some of these seem somewhat recognizable -- Grace Kelly, maybe, and Lucille Ball. There is an air of kitschiness to them, as well as a fetching artificiality. The detailing and background colors are fabulous. And they are thoroughly a mystery. They were acquired in Chicago, they're more than 40 years old. Oils by the same hand, though in a slightly different format, are signed Crandal. There's little else to know besides what the artist himself or herself put into the art.
