I lived in Brooklyn in ’85 near the ‘HARDWARE AND PAIN’ store you depict here https://www.interestingideas.com/roadside/names/HardwareAndPain72.jpg and I don’t know if this is a recent photo or an old photo you scanned but I promise you that sign said ‘Hardware and Pain’ all the way back when I lived there in ’85.
The picture is from 1986 or ’87 when I was living in Brooklyn. I suspect the store is gone now.
