Durham, NC – The newly founded, Outsider Art Gallery, Durham’s gallery specifically dedicated to exhibiting and selling works by Southern outsider artists, will host an open house Sunday, December 6, 2009 from 2 – 4 pm. This event is free and open to the public. The Outsider Art Gallery is located at 718-C Iredell Street, just around the corner from Whole Foods Market.
Outsider Art is often identified as the creative work of artists who are self-taught and not formally trained. Often these artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. The movement has been gaining popularity since the term “Outsider Art” was first coined in 1972 and has steadily moved to the forefront as a recognized and celebrated art form and sought out genre by collectors. “There was no gallery in Durham specifically focused on bringing the works of these artists to our community”, states Pamela Gutlon, founder and proprietor of Outsider Art Gallery.
Gutlon’s longtime passion and appreciation for Outsider Art was inspired by her mother, Audrey Chase, an active art supporter in Durham and avid collector of the genre. Gutlon’s previous position as Director of Facilities at the John Hope Franklin Center, where she oversaw the facility’s two galleries, and her relationship with mentor and nationally recognized gallery owner, Ginger Young of Chapel Hill, lead her to conceptualize and open the Outsider Art Gallery in November of this year.
“There is something for everyone here”, Gutlon states, “You can get a hand-felted bird pin for $10 or you can purchase a framed original painting by a nationally recognized artist for $3000.” The Outsider Art Gallery exhibits work in a variety of mediums including found metal sculpture, felted wool adornments, handcrafted jewelry, paintings on tin roof panels and wooden replicas. There are works by well-known southern artists Mose Tolliver and Jimmy Lee Sudduth as well as emerging artists like Mark May, Peter Loose and Reverend Mary Proctor. Alongside the artwork are bios so visitors can learn more about the artists whose works are displayed.
The Open House on December 6th will be the second of what will become bimonthly events at the gallery. “We had so much fun at the last one we decided to have another”, Gutlon states. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11 am – 6 pm, and by appointment. To schedule an appointment for a showing call 919.451.3231 or email pgutlon@outsiders-art.com. To view a small sampling of the works featured visit http://www.outsiders-art.com.
