If you’re interested in Chicago’s unique lakefront rock carvings, there will be a number of opportunities in the summer and early fall of 2022 to see and appreciate them.
The walking tour of the carvings at Promontory Point scheduled for Sept. 11 has been rescheduled because of weather to Sunday Oct. 9. We’ll start at 11:30 a.m. near the fountain. In addition to the many historical carvings around the Point, we’ll see new ones created just in the last few months!
On Sept. 24 I’ll be doing a tour of the carving-rich area around Foster Beach for Friends of the Parks as part of its Netsch lecture series.
To hear the full story of the carvings, you can join my Zoom presentation for the ELA Area Public Library Monday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. .
Meanwhile, stone carvers Roman Villareal and Joel Cardenas conducted a carving demonstration at Promontory Point on May 28 that resulted in three wonderful carvings by them and nearly a dozen by folks attending the event. Here’s a photo gallery that shows the results.
If you haven’t bought my book, go here to get a copy of Lakefront Anonymous: Chicago’s Unknown Art Gallery, which tells the story of the carvings and includes hundreds of pictures.
