Lakefront Carvings This Summer

If you’re interested in Chicago’s unique lakefront rock carvings, there will be a number of opportunities in the summer of 2022 to see and appreciate them.
Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, the Promontory Point Conservancy will be celebrating its first annual Point Day celebration. This is your chance to show your support for preservation of this historic site, and you can also join these three carving events:
Promontory Point

On Saturday at 10 a.m. Roman Villareal, carver of the mermaid that is now at Oakwood Beach, will be at the Point talking about that famous carving and other carvings.

At  1 p.m. the same day I’ll be giving a walking tour of the historical carvings around the Point. There will be a bit of climbing involved in this tour.

I’ll be giving another tour of the Point carvings the next day, Sunday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. There will be a bit of climbing involved in this tour.

To join any of these events, you need only show up at the Point. Specifically, look for a table near the east end of the pedestrian tunnel under Lake Shore Drive, between the Wallach Fountain and the National Register plaque. There will be people to help and direct, and posters with events listed and where to go. The walks will leave from the National Register plaque.
